On average we produce 4.5 pounds of trash per day per person. That begins to add up quickly! What happens to it then? According to the EPA roughly 53% is buried in landfills, 13% is incinerated, and 34% is recycled or composted.
This all affects our environment, the air we breath, the land we live on, the water we drink, the food we eat…
Having eco-friendly salon practices is near and dear to me. Hair services produce an enormous amount of waste, hair clippings, foils, gloves, chemical color, plastic bottles, etc, etc. Over the past 3+ years as a hair professional I have worked towards a nearly zero waste practice.
I am fortunate to live in a city (Norman, Oklahoma!) who has a pretty comprehensive recycling program. Through this local resource I am able to recycle all paper, plastics, and some metals.
In 2015, my original salon, The Green Grove, became the first Green Circle Salon in Oklahoma! This is a sustainable partnership I still maintain as The Green Hairdresser. Green Circle Salons is on a mission to make the salon industry a sustainable industry. They provide resources for recycling salon specific items hair clippings, hair color tubes, and excess hair color. I love their mission and if you are salon professional and want to learn more feel free to talk to me about this wonderful resource!
In addition to recycling, I strive to find reusable alternatives to prevent the waste in the first place. Washable “foils” for highlighting, reusable bags, stainless steel applicators, t-shirt towels, and more. I am always looking for ways to reduce, reuse, and recycle.
